Celebrated for its ambience, Windamere is regarded as a perfect example of an inn of the British colonial era, `a jewel of the Raj`.
Built in the mid-19th century, Windamere was a cozy boarding house for bachelor English and Scottish tea planters. In early 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, it was converted into a hotel.
The Windamere is situated on Observatory Hill. Magnificent panoramas of twenty of the world's highest mountains, ascending from deep purple valleys, open up in every direction from the hill. Windamere overlooks the Chowrastra, Darjeeling's exclusive promenade and mall.
