Tripura is the last of the North-Eastern states, located precariously at a corner of the Indian map with Bangladesh as its neighbour on three sides only on its east, there is the Indian state of Mizoram and Assam. The hilly state is the third smallest state in India but it shares a border with Bangladesh a total of 10500 km. The total geographical area of Tripura is 10491 square km.
The plains of Tripura are dominated by the Bengali population whereas the hills are tribal land of mixed culture with different tribes such as the Bhils, Mizzo, Chaimal, Chakma, Garo, Halam, Jamatia etc. living in perfect harmony here. Tripura is bestowed with nature's splendour and grandeur with the lush green landscape all around and diverse population with their unique culture.
It is generally believed that the name Tripura originated from the ancient king ‘Tripur’ who ruled the area in ancient times. The state capital is Agartala which is in the eastern plains bordering Bangladesh. Agartala is the largest city and cultural hub. The people here speak Bengali also Kokborok. Mui Borok is the Traditional food of Tripura. Meat is the main ingredient of Tripuri Cuisine.
The main attraction of the city is the Ujjayanta Palace, which is situated in the heart of the city. The name of the palace was given by Rabindranath Tagore. It is also the location of the Tripura State Museum. The place stands on the banks of the Lakes and is surrounded by the Lush Greeneries of the Mughal Gardens.
Tripura Sundari or Matabari Temple
Tripura Sundari temple also known as Matabari temple, is a popular religious place for locals and tourists alike. The highly revered deity of Tripura Sundari resides at Udaipur which is the former capital of the state. It is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The main temple is built in the traditional Bengali hut style. It is believed that Satis' right foot fell here during the great carnage.
Unakoti is an offbeat Heritage travel destination of Tripura. It is situated about 170 km from Agartala and is home to numerous splendid rock carvings.
Sepahijala Sanctuary is one of the best wildlife Sanctuaries in Tripura. It is home to more than 150 varieties of birds and a wide variety of other wildlife and plants. Tourists can explore the Zoo, Orchid Garden, and Rubber Plantation here.
These are the highest hills of the state in the northeastern part of the state. The Mizoram state border is nearby. The Jampui Hills are a natural attraction for visitors who wish to enjoy nature. It is also an important place for those interested to understand and interact with the hilly tribals of the state.
The temperature in the plains can be on the warmer side, while in the tribal hills, the weather is cooler. Summer temperature can go close to even 40 degrees in the plains occasionally. Winter months are cooler and more comfortable to travel here. There are no constraints in travelling to Tripura at any time of the year.
The capital of Agartala is well connected by Train and Air. There are regular flights from other major cities such as Guwahati and Kolkata. Agartala also has a rail station and is connected to the rest of India through Guwahati in 2016. The train route is lengthy and trains are infrequent. Hence Air travel is a better option for those who can afford it. It is also possible to travel to Tripura by road. The Shillong Agartala road takes about 12 to 13 hours to cover the 465 km distance.
