Lachung is one of the most exquisite villages in the valleys of North Sikkim. At an altitude of 8610 ft, it is located at a distance of 120 km from Gangtok and is frequented by travellers intending to visit the Yumthang, Katao, and Yumasamdong areas of North Sikkim.
With resplendent snow-capped mountains, dazzling waterfalls and sparkling streams, Lachung has been described as the "most picturesque village of Sikkim" by none other than Joseph Dalton Hooker in his definitive, The Himalayan Journal (1855). A small monastery adorning a solitary hilltop is a perfect place for meditation. The entire valley gets a completely different look in winter when wrapped by a thick layer of snow. Lachung has a small market but due to the tourist influx several small and medium hotels have come up.
Lachung is about 120 km from Gangtok. You have to travel through the North Sikkim Highway through Phodong, Mongan, and Chungthang before reaching here. Average travel time is 6 to 7 hours but varies widely depending on the condition of the road at the time of journey. The terrain is quite rough and Lachung often becomes inaccessible both during Monsoon due to heavy rain and landslides and also during winter due to excessive snowfall. Please talk to our guest service executive to know about the current condition of the road and accessibility.
As for the rest of North Sikkim, Lachung can be visited only by booking a package tour through a recognized travel agent. This is because you require a special restricted area permit to travel here and the permit is given only to tourists travelling on a package tour. The package includes your travel, accommodation, food, and sightseeing.
Tourists use Lachung as the base to travel to Yumthang Valley and its surrounding areas such as Katao and Yumasamdong. The small town in itself is also an interesting stay. You can spend some leisure hours sitting beside the Lachung-Chu River, mesmerized by the beauty of the place. The local monastery is also a nice place to spend an evening and learn about the local Buddhist culture.
Over the last decade, several tourist accommodations have come up here. But you must remember the remoteness of the place due to which the accommodation standard here cannot be directly compared to the hotels in other major tourist destinations. Hotels here cannot be booked directly as it is part of your package tour. But you can check the hotel information and accordingly inform our executive to include a particular hotel for your tour.
